Mangosteen (Garcinia magonstana) denotes the crushed, fine powder of the alkaloid compounds in the mangosteen fruit rind. This rind contains 40 antioxidant nutraceutical xanthone alkaloids, each with a different array of healing properties. Antioxidants are found in Nature and they are also produced within the body. They are compounds that are particularly rich in hydrogen and excess electrons.
These hydrogen-rich and electron-rich compounds are usually visible to our eyes as pigments of color in plants. It is the availability of the excess electrons that allows antioxidants to deactivate free radicals. Free radicals are molecules that are missing electrons and can cause oxidation and tissue damage, resulting in aging conditions ranging from wrinkles to cancer.
The three most well-studied xanthone antioxidants in mangosteen at this time are alpha-mangostin, gamma-mangostin, and garcinone E. The xanthone antioxidants in the rind of the mangosteen fruit are also known to fight the organisms that cause rheumatism and arthritis better than any other known botanical substance.
