Tribulus terrestris is an herb that grows naturally in many parts of the world including the Americas, Australia, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. The fruits/berries are the parts most often used in traditional medicine.
This herb has been used in the traditional medicine of China and India for centuries for infertility, erectile dysfunction, and low libido. In the mid-1990s, Tribulus Terrestris became popular in North America for improving sports performance after Eastern European Olympic athletes said that taking Tribulus helped their performance.
The active compounds in Tribulus are called steroidal saponins. Two types, furostanol glycosides and spirostanol glycosides, appear to be involved with the effects of Tribulus. These saponins are found primarily in the leaf.
Tribulus may work by relaxing smooth muscles and increasing blood flow into the corpus cavernosa. The relaxant effect observed is probably due to the increase in the release of nitric oxide from the endothelium and nerve endings. Since it relaxes smooth muscles, this may account for its benefits in abdominal colic.
As of January 2011, we are not aware of specific human research with this herbal supplement in terms of evaluating its role as an aphrodisiac in a man or woman. However, many men and women consistently report that the use of this dietary supplement does provide sexual enhancement in terms of sex drive, erectile function, and performance. Tribulus supplementation does enhance sexuality in the majority of those who take it. The sexual enhancement is noticed generally within a few days.
Tribulus has been studied in China and early reports indicates that it reduces the frequency of angina pectoris. It also appears from lab studies that this herb may cause death to cancer cells. The clinical significance of this finding is not clear at this time.

Serving Size: If you are new to this herb, it is best to start small (1/16-1/8 teaspoon), and gradually build up as your body adapts to its potency to 1/2 teaspoon or more.
