Tips before using

  • Stop using all products containing silicone for at least 10 days before you apply your Hairprint® treatment. Hairprint® Chelating Shampoo can help remove silicone residue from the hair. Use this shampoo several times leading up to your Hairprint® application. If you feel your hair is oily or sticky after washing with the Chelating shampoo, wash again and leave it on for 5 minutes before rinsing. If you feel you have a very heavy buildup of silicone on your hair and scalp, you may also want to use the Hairprint Exfoliating shampoo to help slough off the layers of silicone.
  • If you do not use products containing silicone, avoid using all hair products including shampoo and conditioner, for the two days prior to using Hairprint®. We recommend using Hairprint® Chelating shampoo on the day of your Hairprint® application to ensure all coatings are removed from the hair. This is especially important if you have hard water, in order to remove mineral buildup from your water.
  • Watch our instructional video below as it shows you every step of the process. Then read the instructions through a few times. You will soon be a pro!
  • The Hairprint® process takes 80-90 minutes, but the first time always takes longer because you are learning. So, just relax and make sure you set aside enough uninterrupted time to complete the entire process without rushing.
  • Hairprint® can stain hands, clothing, towels, and absorbent surfaces as it is a pigment. Wear and use dark clothing and towels during the application process. We recommend wearing gloves at all times when using this product.
    1. If Hairprint® gets on your skin, wipe it off with a wet towel or use a cleanser to remove it.
    2. If your forehead or scalp is dry, it may temporarily stain but will fade with subsequent shampooing. To prevent staining, put a thin coat of olive oil or skin cream on your forehead and temples.
    3. If coloration happens on your hands during application, it wears off quickly. We recommend wearing gloves at all times.
  • Use a clean, dry non-metallic bowl (anything but aluminum) that can hold a quart or more because the mixture expands.
  • A clock or timer is necessary in order to time the applications.
  • Stay near a shower or sink with sprayer as you'll need to rinse your hair during the entire process.

Hairprint® is a three-part process, with each step taking a little over 20 minutes. Steps #1 and #2 catalyze melanin inside your hair. Step #3 locks in the eumelanin so that it cannot leave the hair. The eumelanin molecule is large and will stay in the hair for months at a time.

How to Apply

If you have chemically treated hair right now, whether it's dyed, highlighted, bleached, permed, relaxed, or keratin-treated please do NOT follow the directions on this page. Please click on Transition Tips below and follow those application instructions instead.

Transition Tips

single kit application

IDEAL FOR: People with LESS than 50% gray and LESS than 10 inches of length

PRETREATMENT
  • Wet your hair with warm water. Work the contents of the Prepare packet vigorously into your hair, paying special attention to the gray hairs. Leave it on the hair for 5 minutes and then rinse. Towel dry hair until damp.
STEP 1:
  • With gloves on, pour contents of a Restore (liquid) and Restore (powder) packets into a non-metallic bowl. Stir together with the brush. The mixture will swell and expand.
  • When the mixture is light red (about 10 seconds), begin to apply to your gray hair first using the brush as a spatula. (As you apply, the mixture will continue to change color and eventually turn black, but this will not be your final color.) Within 6 minutes, apply and massage all of the mixture to your hair as if it were a conditioner, working it into the scalp hair and then down the length of the hair. Don’t daub it on the hair like a dye. Use your gloved fingers to work it into the roots, just as you would rub in a hair conditioner. Begin with the gray areas first and make sure they are always fully covered by the formula.
  • Set your timer for 15 minutes. When the time is up, do not rinse.

STEP 2:
  • With your gloved hand, wipe away any excess product.
  • Mix the other Restore (liquid) and Restore (powder) packets in your bowl and apply to your hair in the same way as Step 1. Work it in like a conditioner, making sure all of the hair is massaged thoroughly.
  • Set your timer for 15 minutes.
  • When the time is up, rinse out the Hairprint® with warm water until the water runs clear. Towel dry until damp (do NOT use a hair dryer).

STEP 3:
  • Mix Complete (liquid) and Complete (powder) packets together in your bowl and apply to your hair in the same way as Step 1. You will notice the formula turns purple and does not expand like the previous two steps.
  • Apply to the hair within 6 minutes of mixing.
  • Set your timer for 15 minutes.
  • Rinse with lukewarm water until the water runs clear. Shampoo with a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo. Rinse. Condition your hair.

Please note: It is completely normal for your hair color to be much darker than your true hair color after applying Hairprint®. Rest assured, this will only last a short time while the product works with your hair to adjust to your exact natural color over the course of about a week. Please be aware that our perception of our hair color is generally different than our innate color. The hair we are accustomed to seeing in the mirror is continually exposed to chlorine, shampoo, sunlight, and the environment, so most often, our true hair color is darker than what we are used to seeing.

Long-time Gray Hair/Persistent Gray Hair: If you have had gray hair for a long time, you may need to use two kits back-to-back to get persistent grays to turn back to their natural color. Here's how you do it: Use Kit 1 in it's entirety, following the directions. If you find you can still see gray hairs, open up Kit 2. SKIP the pretreatment. Apply steps 1, 2, and 3, following the directions.

Resistant Grays: Can be greatly alleviated by the use of baking soda. During the pretreatment process, take some baking soda and rub it into the resistant hairs, either against the scalp or between the thumb and index finger. This will provide more alkalinity (which opens up the cuticle) and helps remove sebum that might be coating the hair.

Double kit application

IDEAL FOR: People with MORE than 50% gray, hair LONGER than 10 inches, non-porous hair; thick hair; white hair.

(We do not recommend Hairprint for people whose hair is completely gray/white as it works for some people and not others. This is due to changes in porosity that occur with age.)

PRETREATMENT
  • Wet your hair with warm water. Work the contents of the Prepare packet vigorously into your hair, paying special attention to the gray hairs. Leave it on the hair for 5 minutes and then rinse. Towel dry hair until damp.
STEP 1:
  • With gloves on, pour contents of Restore (liquid) and Restore (powder) packets from Kit #1 into a non-metallic bowl.
Begin with the gray areas first and make sure they are always fully covered by the formula.
  • Set your timer for 10 minutes. When the time is up, do not rinse. With your gloved hand, remove excess product.
  • Follow the above directions to mix the other Restore (liquid) and Restore (powder) packets from Kit #1. Work it into your hair like a conditioner, making sure to massage thoroughly into the hair.
  • Set your timer for 15 minutes. When the time is up, rinse with warm water until the water runs clear. Towel dry until damp.

STEP 2:
  • Repeat the process above with Step #1 and Step #2 from Kit #2.
  • Set the timer for 10 minutes. When the time is up, do not rinse. With your gloved hand, remove excess product.
  • Repeat the process above with Restore (liquid) and Restore (powder) packets from Kit #2. Work it into your hair like a conditioner, making sure to massage thoroughly into the hair.
  • Set your timer for 15 minutes. When the time is up, rinse with warm water until the water runs clear. Towel dry until damp.
  • When the time is up, rinse out the Hairprint® with warm water until the water runs clear. Towel dry until damp (do NOT use a hair dryer).

STEP 3:
  • Mix Complete (liquid) and Complete (powder) packets from Kit #1 together in your bowl and apply following the same methods as in previous steps. You will notice the formula turns purple and does not expand like the previous two steps.
  • Apply to the hair within 6 minutes of mixing. When the time is up, do not rinse. With your gloved hand, remove excess product.
  • Repeat the process above with Complete (liquid) and Complete (powder) packets  from Kit #2. Work it into your hair like a conditioner, making sure to massage thoroughly into the hair.
  • Set your timer for 10 minutes.
  • Rinse with lukewarm water until the water runs clear. Shampoo with a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo. Rinse. Condition your hair.

Long-time Gray Hair/Persistent Grey Hair: If you have had gray hair for a long time, you may need to use two double applications back-to-back to get persistent grays to turn back to their natural color. You can immediately repeat the above process with two more kits, skipping the Pretreatment.

Half Kit Application

IDEAL FOR: Less than 1 inch of roots that are 30% or less gray

(NOT IDEAL for first time users, regardless of root length)

SPLITTING A KIT

Hairprint® cannot be measured by volume or ounces. To divide your kit in half, you will need a gram scale. We recommend one that measures 1/10th of a gram.

Liquid Packets: Pour out 56-57 grams.

Restore Powder Packets: Measure out and use 17.5 grams.

Complete Powder Packet: Measure out and use 5 grams.

PRETREATMENT

  • Wet your hair with warm water. Work the entire contents of the Pretreatment packet vigorously into your hair, paying special attention to the gray hairs. Leave it on the hair for 5 minutes and then rinse. Towel dry hair until damp. (We do not recommend splitting a packet of Pretreatment, as a full packet is necessary for Hairprint to be most effective. Additional packets of Pretreatment can be purchased HERE)
STEP 1-3
  • Follow the directions for Single Kit Application above.

Double Half Kit Application

IDEAL FOR: 1-3 inches of roots and/or roots that are more than 30% gray

SPLITTING A KIT

Hairprint® cannot be measured by volume or ounces. To divide your kit in half, you will need a gram scale. We recommend one that measures 1/10th of a gram.

Liquid Packets: Pour out 56-57 grams.

Restore Powder Packets: Measure out and use 17.5 grams.

Complete Powder Packet: Measure out and use 5 grams.

PRETREATMENT

  • Wet your hair with warm water. Work the entire contents of the Prepare packet vigorously into your hair, paying special attention to the gray hairs. Leave it on the hair for 5 minutes and then rinse. Towel dry hair until damp. (We do not recommend splitting a packet of Prepare, as a full packet is necessary for Hairprint to be most effective. Additional packets of Prepare can be purchased HERE)
STEP 1-3
  • Follow the directions for Double Kit Application above.

Beard Facial Hair

Facial hair is different in texture, strength, and porosity than scalp hair. It may not accept the Hairprint as easily as the hair on your head. It works well for most men and not as well for some others. This process requires a bit more time because facial and scalp hair differ.

SPLITTING A KIT

If your facial hair is short, divide one regular size kit in half following the Half Application Instruction above.

PRETREATMENT

  • Wet your hair with warm water. Work the entire contents of the Pretreatment packet vigorously into your hair, paying special attention to the gray hairs. Leave it on the hair for 15-20 minutes to soften it up and then rinse. The tougher the beard, the longer you should leave the Pretreatment on. Towel dry hair until damp.

APPLICATION

Apply to your facial hair following the instructions for Single Kit Application exactly as stated EXCEPT leave each step on the hair for 18-20 minutes rather than for 15 minutes.
